Five Steps to Build Capability

Here are five simple steps you can take today to unlock more capability in the people who work with you.

  1. Explore with your staff any additional talents, capabilities or interests they may have and then create space in their jobs to give expression to these talents.

  2. Stretch your staff by providing responsible challenge. Set them more demanding objectives based on their talents, capability and ambition. Of course these objectives should be concrete, measurable and controllable.

  3. Include your staff in wider discussions about departmental and company direction, objectives and finding solutions to the problems that arise in meeting this direction.

  4. Create an environment of positive encouragement. It will reinforce the behavior you are seeking, your staff will gain strength and confidence and most importantly it will fuel an appetite for more challenging future objectives.

  5. Gradually release more responsibility to your staff. Step back and give them the chance to be heros, owning the outcomes from their tasks and the associated success.
